Who can apply?
We encourage teams of 6 to 8 participants accompanied by one teacher from schools in Germany, Poland and alternating other countries to apply. One student in the group should be willing to take over the leadership of the group and will act, together with the teacher, as the contact person for the organizers. One further member of each group should be a member of the student newspaper or another local newspaper and be willing to work in the press group that produces media coverage (newspapers, films, etc.) of the trainings and trial simulations on site. The accompanying teacher is responsible for organizing the group travel and supporting the participating students with their preparation.
How to apply?
MICC School takes place in May and December of each year. School groups of six to eight students (aged 15-19) from Germany, Poland and designated other countries are invited to submit applications by the deadlines to be found on this page for the MICC event they would like to take part in. The groups should be coordinated by a teacher, who would accompany the group to Krzyzowa and would be willing to take part in a human rights education seminar for teachers there. As the MICC-School takes place in English, all students and the teachers should be proficient in English.
The next MICC School takes place: 20th to 26th April 2012
Deadline for applications has expired.
What happens after we apply?
The selected schools will be notified within one week after the application dead-line and will be given access to the preparation material. At the same time, each participating school will also receive a pool of roles to divide among the participants. These roles will be prosecution, defence or judge in one of the four cases simulated at the MICC or press team member. Each prosecution, defence and judge team will be made up of four participants, each from a different. The teams thus formed are expected to keep in contact and prepare their case via internet.
Approximately one month before the simulation (the participants will be notified within due time), each prosecution and defence team is expected to submit a 1-2 page position paper, comprising the core arguments used in their prosecution/ defence strategy. In short, the prosecution should have a strategy to convince the judges that the person indicted in the case is truly guilty for the crimes under discussion and should make an argument in favour of a fair punishment, while the defence should weaken the prosecution's position, pointing out their argumentative weaknesses and bringing their own arguments in favour of their client's innocence to the forefront. Both positions should be based only on the legal material and facts comprised in the preparation material put at the disposal of participants by the organizers. On the basis of the position papers prepared by the prosecution and the defence teams, the judges will then have to prepare a preliminary judgement on whether the person indicted in their case is guilty and what punishment is fair for the established crime. The press team members should prepare an article of about two pages dealing with the human rights situation in their country. All the papers should be sent to the organizers one week before the event.
